Obituary for Clifford H. Chapman

SCOTTSVILLE - passed away peacefully on April 3, 2021. He was born March 11, 1939 to Rev. Hiram and Thelma Chapman in Wayland, NY. He is predeceased by his parents, his son, David Chapman, and his brother, Larry. He is survived by Barbara, his wife of 48 years; his daughter, JoAnn (Scott) Armistead of Richmond, VA; grandchildren, Jared (Elizabeth) Armistead of Harrisburg, PA, Noah and Seth Armistead of Richmond, VA, Cheyenne and Dakota Chapman of Brockport, NY; brothers, Earle (Ellen) Chapman of Augusta, ME and Don (Ruth) Chapman of Ponce Inlet, FL; sister-in-law Charlotte Wytias of Bailey, CO.

Cliff was a graduate of Brockport High School, class of 1956. He was a machinist at Kodak for 35 years. His work involved developing machines for coating and spooling film. After he retired from Kodak, he worked in his well-equipped shop at home. There, he immersed himself in restoring antique tractors and fabricating machine parts for his farming friends and neighbors in and around Scottsville, where he and Barb lived for 32 years. His favorite pastimes were showing his tractors in area parades and in pulling and plowing competitions. Clifford was a jack of all trades and a master at many. The joy of his life was the excellence of his work.

Cliff was a builder, woodworker, renovator, mason, electrician, plumber and all- around handyman. At his cottage on Keuka Lake all these skills were put to good use. There was no place on earth he loved more. In the summers, he enjoyed boating and waterskiing on the crooked lake. His other hobbies were hunting, fishing and snowmobiling. Like his ancestor, Johnny Appleseed, he had a talent for growing things. Many people’s yards display his transplanted trees. He and Barb traveled many miles on their motorhome trips during their retirement years. Scottsvillians knew him for his work on the project of moving and restoring the Wheatland No. 4 Schoolhouse now located on the T.J. Connor school campus.

Visitation will be at the J.H. Cameron Funeral Home 26 Rochester St. Scottsville on Friday, April 9 from 2 to 5 PM.
