Obituary for Lt. Col (Ret.) Thomas Jean Moore

RUSH- Thomas J. Moore took his last breath while sleeping on September 19, 2022. He was 104 years old. Thomas is predeceased by his wife of nearly seventy-five years, Florence Moore (Phillips); his parents Joseph and Pauline Moore (Thompson); brothers, Joseph Jr., David, Robert, and Paul; sisters, Gertrude Manns, Phyllis Stevens, Elizabeth Logan and Joan. He is survived by three of his eleven siblings, Jean Kenney, Jacqueline Hopkins, and Judith Henry; his sisters-in-law, Marion Phillips (Sellers) and Barbara Ann Jones (Phillips); and over 100 nieces, nephews and greats.

After graduating from East High School, Thomas enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943. Having completed twenty years of service, he said, “I joined because it was the right thing to do.” Thomas served as an officer with the 92nd Infantry Division and fought during WWII. His tour included the countries of Japan, Korea, Germany, and Italy. He was promoted to Lt. Colonel in 1962 and was decorated with the following medals: American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal (Germany), Combat Infantryman Badge, Purple Heart Medal (Italy), UN Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Armed Forces Reserve Medal. He retired from service October 31, 1963.

Thomas and Florence were married in 1946 and moved from Chicago, Ill to the Rochester, NY area. They eventually settled in Rush, NY where they resided for over fifty years before moving to Greece, NY to be closer to family. As a civilian, Thomas was an Assistant Vice President at Central Trust Bank. He and Florence were avid golfers, and they enjoyed traveling and taking ship cruises with family members. The couple had no children of their own, but thoroughly enjoyed the company of their siblings’ children and grandchildren, of whom they were very proud.

Family members will attend a private graveside service at Oatka Cemetery in Scottsville, NY, on Friday, where Thomas and Florence will be laid to rest.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the VFW 9251 Pennington-Moye Post, 200 West Ave., Rochester, NY 14611.
